March 15  Tonight was the Society's Second Anniversary Party, and as usual we had a jazz band to play for our entertainment. The band chosen for this event was the J3 Intent, who were making their second appearance in the Cottage. After an extremely popular debut as a trio last year, the band expanded by a third to add a guitarist to their numbers to make them into a quartet. The band comprises Justin Gruby (saxophones/conga drums), Jeff Rendlen (bass/electric bass),  David Schwartz (guitar), and Jason Haaheim (drums).

The band started with Chick Corea's 500 Miles High, with Justin soloing on alto saxophone and Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay with Justin again soloing on alto and some great throbbing bass by Jeff. Saints in the Trees came next and this original composition was followed by Bright Size Life, a tune written by Pat Metheny which featured Justin on conga drums, some nice George Benson-like guitar work from David, and a nice bass solo by Jeff. A Calming Breeze, showcasing Justin on soprano sax and the unusually named funky Septic Tank Breakdown came next, before the band went into way-out fusion mode with another Chick Corea composition titled Spain, which featured solos from all the band members. Joe Henderson's Recorda Me had a Latin feel with Justin switching to alto, before a great version of Cherokee and a superb arrangment of the Peter Gunn Theme really hit the spot. The pace slowed down for Henry Mancini's Days of Wine and Roses, before the tempo increased again for Jazz Crimes.  A tour de force rendition of Wayne Shorter's hard bop classic Witch Hunt, with solos by Justin on alto and Jeff on bass, brought us up to the last tune of the evening........an amazing version of Dizzy Gillespie's A Night in Tunisia featuring some great guitar playing by David. March 8  Tonight we welcomed recording engineer Nick Eipers as our guest presenter. Nick gave us an extremely interesting presentation that took us behind the scenes of what actually happens in a recording studio. We learned what actually takes place during the recording a jazz album.

March 1  This evening was another live jazz event. The band that entertained us was the youthful DG Jazz, a quartet comprised of four boys still in high school. These young guys are the future of jazz in this country and iot was nice that the Society could give them a place to showcase their talent. The quartet consists of Darren Horvath (tenor and alto saxophones), Nate Van Asselt  (keyboards/trumpet), Justin Kono (drums/trumpet), and Zach Munoz (electric bass).

Miles Davis' Four started off the procedings and this was followed by Wayne Shorter's Footprints and Thelonious Monk's Blue Monk, the latter featuring Nate playing both trumpet and keyboards. The pace slowed down for In a Sentimental Mood which was a showcase for Darren on tenor saxophone, and then the tempo again increased for John Coltrane's Impressions. My Romance featured drummer Justin doubling on trumpet, while April in Paris ended the first half of the evening with Nate playing both keyboards and trumpet. The second set opened with Sonny Rollin's Doxy followed by some Brazilian jazz in the shape of Antonio Carlos Jobim's How Insensitive. Next came another standard in The Nearness of You, with a fine electric bass solo by Zach. Kenny Dorham's Blue Bossa and George Gershwin's Summertime featured solos by each of the band members. Next up was an untitled original written by the band, before the evening's music came to a close with a rousing version of Thelonious Monk's Straight No Chaser. Check out the photographs here.

February 22  Tonight was a "Free and Easy Night." Members brought along music from their own collections to play and discuss.
