December 6 Tonight, Frank Slabinak presented "Mystery of Swinging on the Silver Screen," the third in his series of vintage jazz film shorts.
November 29 This evening was a "Free and Easy Night." Members brought along jazz music and video from their own collections to play and discuss.
November 22 - No Meeting
November 15 This evening we welcome back the great West End Jazz Band to the Cottage. The WEJB is one of the most popular bands that have ever played in the Cottage, and they they again entertained us with their hot and sweet jazz of the twenties and thirties. The band is made up of Mike Bezin (cornet/vocals), Leah Bezin (banjo/vocals), Mike Walbridge (tuba), Andy Schumm (alto sax/clarinet) and Frank Gualtieri (trombone).
November 8 Tonight, Society president Ian Tiele preseneds "Jazz on Parade." Ian took a look at the way that jazz musicians have featured parade and march tunes over the last hundred years. We listened to many familiar tunes such as Rampart Street Parade, American Patrol, Strike Up the Band and St. Louis Blues, as well as some that are now rarely heard.
November 1 This evening was titled "A Trio of Jazz Presenters." We were treated to three different presenters talking about three separate jazz topics. The presenters/presentations were Frank Slabinak (Hit of the Week), John Moscinski (Big Band Quiz) and John Van Bosse (Duke Ellington on DVD).
October 25 Tonight, we welcome back Chris Madsen to the Cottage. Chris is one of Chicago's premier saxophonists and he has played for us before with his excellent trio, however this evening he brought his most recent quintet to play for us. The evening's repertoire consisted mostly of original compositions, including all the numbers from Chris' recent "Pop Art" CD. The band featured Chris Madsen (tenor saxophone), Scott Hesse (guitar), Josh Moshier (piano), Charlie Kirchen (bass) and Eric Montzka (drums).
October 18 This evening, guest musician/presenter Monika Herzig presation was "David Baker." Monika has written an excellent book (with a CD of Baker's music included) that looked into the life and career of this great trombone player, who is now a well respected music educator. Monika played various musical tracks that highlighted Baker's playing, composing and arranging skills.
October 11 This evening was a "Free and Easy Night." Members brought along jazz music and video from their own collections to play and discuss.
October 4 - No Meeting
September 27 Tonight, we welcomed back the Mark O'Connor Quintet to the Cottage for some great jazz that included a mixture of classic modern jazz tunes and original compositions. Tonight's fivesome was Mark O'Connor (tenor saxophone), Victor Garcia (trumpet), Ben Lewis (piano), Jon Paul (bass) and Tom Hipskind (drums).
