The Brookfield Jazz Society is a non-profit organization set up with the aim of providing a safe and free place for people of all ages to relax and enjoy jazz music (there are no membership or attendance fees). The idea of starting the Society came to Ian Tiele when he moved from England to live in Brookfield in 2002. Having checked out Brookfield and the surrounding areas, he found that there was no place to meet and enjoy jazz on a social basis in the western suburbs, even though jazz is a popular music form. Ian started the BJS to help fill this gap. The Society started out as the Brookfield Jazz and Blues Society, which was later shortened to just the Brookfield Jazz Society, a change which reflected the musical direction we have taken.
The Society held its first meeting on March 24th, 2005 in the conference room at Brookfield Village Hall. In September 2005, we started holding live gigs in the Cottage (function room) at Irish Times Bar and Restaurant. In January 2006 , the Society moved from the Village Hall to the Cottage on a permanent basis. Our average weekly attendance is now around 30, and we present live jazz events once or twice a month, attracting capacity audiences.
The society has a solid membership that listen to all and each and every style of jazz. It is a place where you can relax and listen to great music, and be entertained by informative talks, and watch jazz movies. Our presenters consist of members, musicians, radio presenters and other enthusiasts. We also have free and easy nights, where members and guests choose the music that is played.
If you are a musician and you think that you may like to play for us, please contact Ian Tiele for further details. Check out the Events page for up-to-date details of our future live events.
If you are knowlegable on a particular aspect of jazz, why not volunteer to give a presentation to the Society. Talks are informal and you don't have to be an expert, just enthusiastic about your subject. Please contact Ian Tiele if this is something that you would like to do.
